Zvimba Rural District Council in Mashonaland West has received more than a million Zimbabwean dollars under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Program 2,(ERRP2) which they are using to rehabilitate about 297,7 km road network in rural and urban areas of the district.
ZRDC Chief Executive Officer Aenas Chidakwa said they have already started the road rehabilitation program after receiving the funds from the government through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA).
“Due to the incessant rains we received most of our roads were in bad shape and we intend to rehabilitate all of the bad roads before the onset of the rains, and we have put a target for 297.7 km which are rural Zvimba and urban area which is Banket and our road technicians are already on the ground carrying out the exercise” he commented to this publication
Most roads around Zvimba Districts are in bad shape resulting in expensive transport costs for both goods and passenger services.
Link roads like Mapinga-Mutorashanga, Banket-Raffingora, and Trelawney-Darwendale and township roads in Banket are in a very poor state resulting in motorists shunning the routes.
Banket Town Board Chairperson and Ward 22 Councillor Never Hutepasi said some of the roads in Kuwadzana Township resemble potato fields.
“We no longer have access roads in Banket especially in Mbira, Gumbo, Tafara streets in the high-density area and some roads in the low-density area resulting in residents failing to drive through these roads with some roads even becoming dangerous to pedestrians especially during the night due to potholes and gulleys that have formed in the roads,” he said
Pirate taxis that ply Banket-Raffingora, Banket-Mutorashanga have since doubled the fares citing the poor state of roads.
