Murombedzi – Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) parliamentary candidate for Zvimba North Constituency, Willard Jenami said former President, Robert Mugabe denied him an opportunity for being installed as a chief due to his links with the opposition.
Speaking during a campaign rally in Murombedzi, Zvimba that was addressed by CCC Presidential candidate, Nelson Chamisa, Jenami said former Local government minister Ignatius Chombo tried to force him to denounce his support for the then Movement for Democratic Change party.
“Former President Mugabe refused to sign my installation as chief as they accused me of supporting MDC. Former local government minister, Ignatius Chombo, was instructed to install someone else after I refused to denounce my support for the MDC then. I told Chombo when he wanted me to denounce the MDC in exchange for being installed as a chief that I would rather keep my conscience. I knew I would eventually represent my people one of the days which I am going to do now as an MP,” he said.
Jenami said he advised former President Mugabe that he had lost support in 2012.
“I told Mugabe to his face in 2012 that he was being misled by his cabinet ministers on his popularity and that the people no longer supported him,” he told the gathering.
CCC President, Nelson Chamisa said that when in power, his government will restore the role of the chiefs’ installation to traditional leaders
“The installation of chiefs will be done through the right channel of tradition and clans, not this current scenario where politicians want to impose their people as chiefs. Our government will restore the dignity and respect of traditional leaders,” he said.
