PAP’s Chief Charumbira on AU pre-election Mission to Nigeria

In recognition of the role of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) as an indispensable institution in strengthening Africa’s democratic institutions, democratic culture, good governance, transparency and the rule of law, the President of the Parliament, H. E. Senator Chief Fortune Charumbira has been invited to participate in the African Union (AU) Pre-election Assessment and Special Political Mission to the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 27 November to 03 December 2022.

The PAP was established in March 2004 by Article 17 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union as the third highest organ (of the nine organs) provided for in the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community signed in Abuja, Nigeria in 1991.

Its establishment is informed by a vision to provide a common platform for African peoples and their grass-roots organizations to be more involved in discussions and decision-making on the problems and challenges facing the continent.

The mission which is in furtherance of the implementation of the African Charter for Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), is based on a constructive approach of preventive diplomacy under the aegis of the AU and with a view to exchanging with the stakeholders of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Abuja in the run-up to the 25 February 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to the AU, the high-level mission will offer a key opportunity to once again, promote the AU’s Aspirations of inducing peaceful, credible, regular, and acceptable electoral process by all actors in line with continental and international standards of democratic elections.
