In a notable display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, the Manica Youth Assembly took part in the National Clean-Up Campaign. Manica Youth Assembly (MAYA), a transformative power organization of young people and women in creating change for socio-economic empowerment and a healthy environment organization, left a mark, enhancing environmental sustainability and community well-being.
Jussa Kudherezera, director of MAYA believes that a clean environment is fundamental to a thriving society.
“Our mission is to inspire and empower individuals to take ownership of their surroundings.
“By raising awareness about the detrimental effects of pollution and fostering a sense of collective responsibility, we can create lasting change.” highlighted Kudherezera
Speaking on the sidelines of this interview, Kudhereza highlighted that the impact of the campaign on the community has been profound.
“Through comprehensive awareness programs, MAYA has successfully educated individuals about the importance of a clean environment and the adverse consequences of pollution. This newfound knowledge has sparked a behavioural shift, with community members embracing their responsibility to maintain a clean and sustainable environment,’’ said Kudherezera
Kudherezera added how the clean-up drive has yielded remarkable results.
“Streets, bus terminus, and water bodies that were once marred by litter and waste have been revitalized. The removal of these eyesores has not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the community but has also made these spaces more enjoyable for residents and visitors alike, added Kudherezera
Jusa explains the importance of sustained community involvement in maintaining the campaign’s success.
“Our goal is to instill a sense of environmental responsibility that transcends the duration of the campaign.
“We achieve this by collaborating with schools, integrating environmental education into the curriculum, and empowering individuals to organize independent clean-up events,’’ explained Jusa
Samantha Mudadisi, a MAYA volunteer who actively participated in the clean-up efforts, shared her motivation for joining the cause.
“I was drawn to the campaign’s potential to make a tangible difference in our community. Cleaning up not only improves our environment but also brings people together. It’s inspiring to see people taking initiative and actively participating in keeping our environment clean to preserve our natural heritage.” shared Samantha
MAYA’s clean-up campaign has not only transformed communities but has also established enduring partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and NGOs. These collaborations have created a network of support, ensuring the campaign’s long-term impact and sustainability.
Jusa’s final words capture the essence of the campaign’s success.
“Together, we have the power to create a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant world. Let us continue to inspire change, one clean-up at a time,’’ said Kudherezera
