Raffingora – Women in Raffingora contend that they have become financially independent through the internal savings groups commonly referred to as “mukando”.
A group of 125 women regularly contribute money to the group’s financial pool weekly which they used to purchase groceries and household utensils shared amongst members.
“The programme has helped us to be financially independent as we are able to afford to feed our families through affordable basic commodities purchases which becomes expensive for an individual,” said Elizabeth Mustafa.
Laiza Chiwashira said the initiative has helped to lessen the burden of taking care of her orphaned grandchildren
“The group has lessened the burden for me as things like monthly groceries are taken care of. I can focus on other needs like school fees for my orphaned grandchildren hence I am really grateful for such initiative which was recommended by our member of Parliament,” she said.
Edgar Machirori said the programme has greatly contributed to the upliftment of families in the Raffingora communities.
“This programme has really helped men as we are no longer being taunted every time salt or sugar runs out. We now focus on other things whilst things like basic commodities are being taken care of through this programme,” he said.
During a recent meeting in Raffingora, members of the group shared groceries, chicken utensils and blankets.
Legislator for Zvimba South Constituency, Marian Chombo who is also the Local Government Deputy Minister urged women to come up with initiatives that help them to be empowered financially and said the government is ready to support women through various programmes.
“I would like to commend you on the success of your savings club which has enabled you to provide for your families. As a responsible woman, one cannot just wait for the husband to buy her things like cooking pots. I would like to urge you to continue with this initiative. It’s pleasing to note that some have even grown their groups to focus on purchasing cars for each other from such small beginnings,” she said.
Chombo said women should also take opportunities created by the second republic for inclusive economic empowerment.
“The second republic led by President Emerson Mnangagwa has created many opportunities for everyone including women so that you effectively participate in the financial sector through institutions like Women’s Bank and Empower Bank for youth and women. You need to utilize these opportunities to financially empower yourself and contribute to the economic growth of the country as we move to attain an upper-middle-income economy by 2030,” she said.
