Cde. John Gwitira, a liberation war hero who miraculously escaped several death attempts and played a vital role to help liberate the people of Zimbabwe has died.
He was a tough-talking, no-nonsense man with a strong stammer. John Gwitira sometimes referred to as “Gwindingwi” his freedom-fighting name, would fight for what is right until the end.
In my view, he should and has to be conferred a Heroes Status. He was one of the most senior guerrilla commanders at the beginning of the liberation war at a very young age.
Speaking to him some years back with other freedom fighters he narrated how he trained the likes of the late General Solomon Mujuru and how they opened the front in the northeast, etc.
There is a lot that can be said about him. OUR HERO AND THE PEOPLE’S HERO, MAY HIS DEAR SOUL REST IN PEACE. WE SHALL NEVER FORGET YOU JOHN GWITIRA (GWINDINGWI).
