Kadoma City Council recently won an award for the best Urban Council in Mashonaland West Province at a colourful ceremony last week, Mayor Nigel Rosario revealed during his Christmas message to the residents of the farming and mining town.
The Kadoma City Council won the award for its contributions towards the Mashonaland West GDP. It also witnessed new developments in terms of infrastructure and increments in the business, agriculture, and tourism sectors.
In his Christmas message, Rosario commended the residents of Kadoma for believing in the Council and working with the municipality.
“Kadoma, being the only city in the Mashonaland West Province, is living up to its billing. The City Council has been availing industrial and commercial stands for small and medium entrepreneurs and business people. This has enabled new and old industries to open,” said Rosario.
The Mayor gave examples of a Kadoma businessman who has ventured into bottling and the reopening of David Whitehead Textiles.
“For example, a local businessman is now into water bottling, rice, and corn making and packing. David Whitehead has reopened recently with the manufacturing of wool and threads underway,” he said.
Of late, the Council has been prioritising service deliveries and has considered critical areas such as the need for water, refuse collection, and drainage systems.
“Council has been prioritising the need for water in all areas, with the new water and sewer engineer on board. Areas such as West View now have access to water for 4-5 hours per day. We are cascading to other suburbs refurbishing old or damaged pipes and we have been refurbishing drainage systems before the rains to avoid last year’s disaster,” said the Mayor.
The SQ and GBs have witnessed the relaying of the sewer pipes which is almost complete. The SQ and GBs areas have been under threat of cholera since raw sewer was the order of the day.
“We have an ongoing project of changing and relaying sewer pipes in residential areas. Rimuka’s SQ/GB area was our starting point and as it stands, works are 80% complete in that area.”
The Mayor praised teamwork between councillors, management, and the residents for making things easier. He established a group that incorporates the Council and the residents so that they discuss what is needed by the residents.
He announced the return of the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund will go beyond supporting people during the festive season.
“We must keep supporting the less privileged in our community. That is why I am happy to announce the return of a solid Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund that will go beyond supporting people during the festive season. Next year, we will launch the Mayor’s Sports Tournament in which we will raise awareness on various issues affecting Kadoma including drug abuse, domestic violence, HIV and AIDS, mental health, and child marriages among other problems,” Mayor Rosario added.
