Rising Zim Hiphop sensation, Denim Woods, is set to make his debut performance at the upcoming Zim Hiphop Awards.
Denim Woods is one of ten Zimbabwean artists, selected for the inaugural edition of emPawa Africa, a continent-wide initiative spearheaded by Nigerian Afro Beats icon Mr Eazi, to identify and nurture Africa’s next generation of talent.
The affable young rapper says he is amped to take the stage as a performing act during the country’s premier Hiphop event.
“I feel like as an emerging hip hop artist I get to be an example to those that feel like they’re not being recognized with their art, so I’m more than happy and excited to be apart of this!” says the emPawa Africa affiliate.
He has assured his growing number of fans and those not yet familiar with his craft that they are in for a special time when he takes to stage.
“All I can promise for my performance is that I’m here to make a statement,” declares the young rapper.
About Denim Woods
Born Abraham Lupwishi, in Lubumbashi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denim Woods, arrived in Zimbabwe via Zambia, unable to speak a single word of English, but only French Creole and his local dialect.
Fast forward a few years later, the natural-born born creative, does more than just speak English fluently.
He now raps flawlessly in his adopted language, as well being multilingual in Shona and some of the indigenous languages of his DRC homeland.
Hiphop has not only given him a voice, it has also seen the emerging rapper ascend rapidly within the genre’s community of demanding connoisseurs.
Denim Woods was drawing on his experiences as an “outcast” to pen tracks that resonate with any young person’s struggle to fit in, while simultaneously defining a personal identity.
Though inspired by legendary Hiphop wordsmith Nas and the Soulful sounds of Erykah Badu Denim Woods style is firmly entrenched in current urban sounds and lifestyles that resonate across borders.
Denim Woods creativity extends beyond the recording booth and stage as he is a fashionista and notable dancer.
