Councillor donates to volunteer street cleaners

Sitting Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councilor for Dzivarasekwa Ward 40, Stephen Dhliwayo, who is also the party’s candidate for the Ward 39 seat, this Tuesday donated an assortment of goodies to volunteer street cleaners in the area under the Chenesa Harare project.

At least one hundred volunteers from across the political divide are taking part in the project, which was introduced as a way for residents to contribute to keeping the environment clean.

Speaking at Dzivarasekwa 2 Shopping Centre during the handover of the groceries, which included bath soap, washing soap, and sugar among others, Dhliwayo applauded the residents for showing unity of purpose in pursuit of a clean and healthy environment in their area despite coming from different political parties.

“I would like to thank you all for dedicating your time out of your busy schedules to assist the city in ensuring that our environment is clean. Let me emphasize that this project is a community initiative that has nothing to do with political affiliation,” he said.

Dhliwayo said as a way of appreciating their efforts, the volunteers, or their dependents, would get first preference in the event that the City of Harare considered employing more street cleaners.

“Your efforts cannot go unnoticed and I promise that the city will prioritize you or your children when it has its next recruitment,” he said.

The City of Harare has been struggling to deal with refuse collection owing to a number of challenges in the economy and the volunteers have come in handy to reduce the burden for the city fathers.

Residents who spoke to this publication applauded the volunteers for the work they were doing and called on the City of Harare to assist them in every way possible.

Dhliwayo promised to bring more groceries in the next two weeks to assist the volunteers.
