Following the accident at Jopa in Chipinge that claimed the lives of 35 members of the Zion Christian Church who were travelling to Mbungo in Bikita for Easter commemorations, the Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) is encouraging religious groupings and the nation at large to strengthen safety measurements in the transport sector.
“As PAZ, we are saddened by the bus disaster that claimed 35 people who were travelling to Mbungo for the Easter commemorations in Bikita. We call upon churches to have adequate transport for their journeys to avoid overloading as a way of ensuring the safety of their congregants wherever they go including celebrations.
“Night travelling is a challenge in terms of road safety because there will be environmental issues, especially to drivers who are not aware of the terrain due to non-availability of road signs, mists and other environmental challenges. Buses must also be checked for brakes and other issues regarding roadworthiness. As Passengers Association of Zimbabwe we wish a speedy recovery to those injured and for the family of the deceased to find solace in God,” Mr. George Goliati, the Paz President, told this publication.
In a statement following the Chipinge Bus disaster, Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi, the leader of the Zion Christian Church said as a church and at a personal level, he was profoundly saddened by the Jopa accident which claimed the lives of 35 of their congregants.
“The deceased people were traveling to Mbungo for Easter commemorations. Our prayers are with the departed and their families at this trying time. The Church’s relief arm RUCORS is now extended to offer material assistance such as food items and clothing, while on the other hand Church Elders are engaged in psychological and spiritual support to victims of the accident and their families.
“Our hearts have been touched by the outpouring condolence messages we have received from people from all walks of life. For this, we are truly grateful. We also express our sincere gratitude to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe for offering appropriate State assistance in mitigating the effects of this disaster. We also thank our partner Ecosure for standing by our side at this time. May the dear souls of the deceased rest in eternal peace,” Bishop Mutendi said.
