An opposition party, the Democratic Union of Zimbabwe says it will brew a shocker by winning the impending plebiscite.
The party led by Robert Chapman launched its manifesto on Saturday in Harare.
Addressing a sizeable crowd, the party’s organising secretary, Maddock Mashonganyika, assured the party’s supporters that DUZ will surprise many and win the elections.
“Don’t be worried about the numbers you see gathered here. I know the media will go and harp about this.
“This party is growing and people want new ideas and leaders. Brace yourself for a surprise win during the 23 August elections,” Mashonganyika said.
Presenting the party’s manifesto, DUZ president Robert Chapman said the electorate is now tired of the main political parties, ZANU PF and CCC for their failures in both central and local government hence will be determined an alternative.
“The Zanu PF government has been in government for 43 years and has failed its mandate. On the other hand, we have an opposition that has been in charge of local authorities for over 20 years including where I come from, Chinhoyi, but service delivery has been poor.
“Our citizens need new ideas and they can’t get them from these spent forces in both political parties. If you really need a change of your lives, DUZ is the answer,” promised Chapman.
DUZ in its manifesto pledged to restore the dignity of civil servants by paying them a living wage. It also promised to improve social services, especially the health care system which has been deteriorating.
The party which formed a pact recently with another opposition party, Patriotic Zimbabweans, also unveiled its leadership to the supporters. Some of the notable faces include Pishai Muchauraya, a former MDC-T legislator, and Lynette Mudehwe, another ex-MDC-T political activist. They are the secretary general and deputy spokesperson respectively.
