Far from feeling disadvantaged, Gertrude Mayanga has found motivation and inspiration in fighting attempts to discourage her as a woman in a business environment.

Celebrating the message of International Women’s Month, she believes that whenever she has been treated unfairly on the basis of being a woman she has found the strength to prove herself and to go even further on her journey of self-discovery and professional growth.

“March is the month in which women are reminded that accepting second best is no longer an option and that we can and must do all we can to get ahead and be whatever it is we wish to be or become,” she said.

Ms. Mayanga is a supervisor in the customer value management section of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, where she focuses on relationship building and adding value to customer experiences, and she believes herself to be a self-starter, as well as a goal-driven person.

“I like to maintain a positive mindset, giving off positive vibes and accepting the need for teamwork,” she said. “We are all part of a team and I strongly believe that together we can win.”

As a mother of three daughters, she is an advocate of empowering all girls and showing them that even the sky is not the limit.

Her advice to women in business is simple: “Believe in yourself and the rest will come to you; work hard and there is nothing you cannot accomplish.”

She said: “While pursuing my master’s degree studies, I put in extra effort to be fully confident in myself, believing I could achieve whatever I set out to if I put the right amount of effort and energy into it. That has worked wonders for me and I hope it’s something that I can impart to other women around me. Give it your all and you will surely succeed.”

She said women’s month each March helps women to realise they are a force to be reckoned with and she celebrates women who serve as an inspiration to her and to all other women. She sees women as agents of growth, socially, economically, culturally, and even in the political arena.

When not working or being a mother, she relaxes with DStv and is a fan of the Food Network and the Home Channel. She and her family add value to their viewing by using the increasingly popular My DStv App.

“I also get to download the shows for viewing later on my computer, especially when there is no electricity, and that means I cannot be defeated, even by power cuts.”
