The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has condemned gender based-violence while advocating for gender equality at workplaces.
Speaking ahead of the 2021 commemorations of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, ARTUZ Gender and Social Welfare Secretary Sukuoluhle Ndlovu reprimanded all perpetrators of violence at workplaces.
She said gender equality is the only therapy for a free gender-based violence working environment.
“As women within the labour movement, we condemn any effort made to restrict women from claiming their labour rights. Any threat to a woman trying to exercise her right to freedom of association and assembly is a form of gender-based violence,” said Ndlovu.
She attributed the violation of women in workplaces to males who hold senior posts at the workplace.
“Some forms of gender-based violence at workplaces include sexual harassment, indecent assault and gender exploitation.
“This is because most leadership positions in most workplaces are male-dominated hence there is room for gender-based violence,” said Ndlovu
The trade unionist urged victims of gender based violence at workplaces to report all forms of violations and stressed the need to raise awareness on gender-based violence.
“As ARTUZ we urge anyone who might feel violated to report cases of gender-based violence to relevant authorities.
“There is also a need to raise education and awareness on gender-based violence at workplaces. Gender-based violence affects work progression since people will fear to air their views and withhold information that can help the company due to fear,” added Ndlovu.
The world commemorations are underway under the theme Gender-Based Violence: Creating Safe Places for Women. This year, ARTUZ commemorations are being held today in Matopos.
