Harare: A young writer’s maiden book has received appraisals from established fellow artistes and academics. The book was officially launched at the National Arts Gallery’s Afrotopia Restaurant on Saturday last week.
Titled Distant Dreams Of Ecstacy, the anthology was penned by John Junior Muchingami (25). It is a compilation of 53 poems touching on love and other social issues.
A recent engineering graduate from the University of Zimbabwe, John – aka Jonarah – had this to say about the production of Distant Dreams of Ecstacy: “l had written over 150 poems. But by repeatedly reading them over and over again l saw how great they were and l thought it would be selfish to keep such writings to myself. So l selected what l thought were the best 53 of them and compiled them. That’s how this book came to be!”
Award-winning entrepreneur, ghostwriter, and television presenter, Sympathy Sibanda Mangwenya, was the guest of honour. She had this to say about the anthology: “His work has a depth and maturity that makes one think deeply. Going through the book made me feel the inspiration that is in each word. The world should wake up to John J because he is here to stay. “
Certified life coach and fellow writer, Nomater Tichaona Shambare, also attended the book launch. He appraised thus: “I did peruse through. The anthology has more to do with love and heartbreak. A good start to poetry but needs to maintain or up the scale.”
The master of ceremony, A. C (real name Reign Bima) praised Jonarah’s artistry.
“It’s a heart-catching collection of emotional writings, stretching from motivation, heartbreak, love, and unity, ” A. C said.
Prominent and renowned University of Zimbabwe lecturer, Dr Juliana Useya added her voice to the appraisals: “Reading his pieces, they personally resonate with me. They make me feel the emotions they want to portray and share. John’s poetic pieces create a memorable and are emotionally resonant.”
