The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has appealed to all political players to be guided by the philosophy of peace, unity, and development of the nation on the eve of the 23 August polls.
In a statement released to mark the Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day commemorations, the consortium undermined violence and bloodshed while calling for all political players to peacefully exercise the democratic process.
“The ZCC notes with concern that the country remains highly polarized as a result of a lack of political tolerance, unresolved issues of past hurts, growing poverty, corruption, and a lack of a common shared vision amongst other social ills. In light of the aforementioned, the ZCC appeals to all political parties to contest the upcoming elections in a manner that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all the people. We urge them to uphold the ideals of justice, openness, and the rule of law and promote unity. Let us respect our heroes’ efforts by ensuring that the democratic process takes place peacefully without bloodshed,” said ZCC.
The churches further expressed that the efforts of the national heroes must be respected and citizens should embrace these celebrations in unity towards building a desirable Zimbabwe for all.
“We take immense pride in our heroes and heroines, who selflessly fought for our freedom and ensured that we can enjoy the benefits of independence today. On this heroes’ day, let us come together as one nation, united in our gratitude for the sacrifices of our heroes. May their legacy inspire us to protect and nurture the gains of our independence,” reads the statement.
The call comes barely after a peace pledge which was signed by the church and political parties last week at Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).
