SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to action from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with Zambia wrapping up their Group C campaign with a clash against Costa Rica on the morning of Monday 31 July.
Thus far the Copper Queens have endured a tough tournament, suffering successive 5-0 losses at the hands of Japan and Spain. This means Bruce Mwape’s team have been eliminated from the competition, regardless of their result against Costa Rica at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Monday.
Las Ticas have also been eliminated from the running, after they were beaten 3-0 and 2-0 by Spain and Japan respectively. That makes this clash between Zambia and Costa Rica all about avoiding the ‘wooden spoon’ in Group C.
Despite their heavy defeat to Spain on Wednesday, Mwape believes the Copper Queens have shown an improvement, and will hopefully carry that momentum into the game against Costa Rica.
“Our performance was not all that bad, despite losing by a big margin,” the Zambian coach told reporters. “Looking at the last game [against Japan] and [against Spain], there has been an improvement. We just made a few mistakes in the first half where we did not start well and allowed two goals
“In the second half towards the end, that’s where we also made some mistakes, but the game overall was better than against Japan.”
He added, “In one v one situations they took advantage as they could eliminate our defenders. Playing the best teams in the world is not easy, but we have learned a lot. Especially when it comes to offensive play, we have seen how our opponents are holding onto possession of the ball and the tactics they are using.”
