An AfroJazz musician and gender activist, Maizon Tazvitya will this Saturday host a show to celebrate women and urge gender equality.
The Dzivarasekwa-born artiste famed for the hit song, Majurumbwe will serenade revelers at FnG Restaurants at Showgrounds. He will be ably supported by songbird Pauline Gundidza.
Speaking to this publication, Maizon said he decided to host the show after March (women’s month), as a gesture to remind the nation of upholding women’s rights.
“We are coming from Women’s Month and as such we need to keep the conversations on fighting gender-based violence alive so as to protect our girls and women,” revealed Maizon who is currently studying for a social sciences degree with Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU).
He bemoaned the soaring cases of domestic violence and implored couples not to ‘force’ relationships.
“My songs seek to inspire particularly women not to force themselves into abusive relationships. Rarely do abusive partners change their ways. It is therefore imperative for one to have self-esteem and pick up the pieces to start all over again,” added the Ancient Tribes frontman.
Roping in Pauline Gunduza who endured a turbulent affair with Rockford Josphat (Roki) but has soldiered on with her music career, resonates well with the artist’s clarion call.
The show will run under the theme “Every day is an International Women’s Day: play your part to protect.”
Among Maizon’s discography are tracks such as Tamari, Ngaichipere, and KwaMungezi and most of these are commentaries on girl and women’s rights issues.
He carved his musical niche at Chipawo and prides himself on having performed alongside the late music great, Oliver Mtukudzi.
