Economist and banker Moses Chundu donated 14 laptops to two schools under Chief Chundu area on Friday in a move aimed at boosting ICT in rural areas.
Chundu donated 7 laptops to Chitindiva primary to each grade in addition to textbooks and practice materials while the other six were for the secondary school. The other laptop was handed to Ward 8 Councillor, Tavengwa Muringanisi, to help in developing programs and accountability.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at the schools, Chundu said that the gesture was in honour of his late father, Chief Noah Chundu, who passed away in 1991.
The schools are situated about 70 kilometres north of Karoi under Hurungwe North constituency.
‘‘This gift is courtesy of Noah’s Ark Foundation, founded in honour of our late father, the great educationist Chief Noah Chundu. It is the beginning of many other interventions in promoting learning and talent development in the context of the new heritage-based 5.0 education system.
“We will also be engaging in community development including the establishment of an orphanage at the late Chief’s homestead among others. The orphanage is in honour of the late Chief’s wife who is also deceased. Note also that the current gift has been funded to the tune of $3000 using personal savings. We believe if communities come together for a cause we can solve many of the development challenges confronting our communities,’’ said Chundu.
He added that there is a need for local people to help in communities that raised them.
“We look forward to seeing more locals working hard to lift the standards of our communities,’’ said Chundu.
Chitindiva secondary School Development Committee chairman, Chamunorwa Kamutsamombe said the ICT boost will help the outlying rural community.
“This donation will boost the confidence of learners when they see one of their own coming out to their rescue in tough times. Our schools had no such gadgets,” said Kamutsamombe.
Local head, Florence Mocho, said it was a befitting gesture after Chundu sited a borehole for the community.
“Villagers here face water challenges and the move to drill a borehole will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of the community. It is a welcome change in our lives,” she said. I am doing this in honor of my late father (Chief Noah Chundu) who would have wanted to do more to develop the community,” he added.
The late Chief Noah Chundu was an educationist before he was elected to be a Member of Parliament representing the Chiefs Council from Mashonaland West province.
Moses Chundu attended Chitindiva primary (1982-1988) and went to Magunje Government school for Form 1 to 4 before going to Chinhoyi High for Advanced levels studies.
He later proceeded to the University of Zimbabwe in 1995 where he obtained BSc Honors in Economics, a Master in Economics, and recently attained a Ph.D. in Economics.
