Power utility, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is taking concrete steps to ensure a reliable supply of electricity.
Speaking to Spiked Online Media following an inquiry into the steps being taken by the power utility to address intermittent power cuts, Eng John Diya, speaking on behalf of the ZETDC Acting Managing Director, Eng Howard Choga, outlined a raft of measures being implemented as a panacea to the challenges.
“As an immediate solution to the challenges, the utility is excited to partner with the two organisations in collaborating to address the current power supply challenges. The partnership will go a long in addressing key issues affecting the utility. The two organisations belong to the same clusters in the national economic blueprint – the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) in achieving Vision 2030 of achieving an upper-middle-income economy.
“To this end, ZETDC is embarking on grid rehabilitation, reinforcement, and expansion hence research and innovation play a pivotal role in achieving this objective,” Eng Diya said.
There is a proposal to come up with a High Performance Computing Centre (HCHPC) partnership that is meant to address the gaps in applications meant to enhance customer experience. This will be a key investment since the utility is embracing the 4th Industrial revolution (4IR).
The development of applications helps aggregate renewable energy forms into the grid through artificial intelligence technologies.
This is achievable through knowledge and skills exchange among the partners.
The Zimbabwe National Geospatial Agency partnership will go a long way in ensuring the security of electricity supplies. Thus the efficient operation of the grid ultimately improves customer experience through improved geographical information systems and data gathering. This will improve the access to electricity through grid reinforcement, rehabilitation, and expansion of the same.
The effects of the geomagnetically induced currents on the grid include transformer saturation, transformer tripping, power shortage, increased system loading, voltage collapse, and unplanned outages.
ZETDC signed MOUs with the two key organisations which are ZINGSA and Zimbabwe Centre for High-Performance Computing ( ZCHPC).
These two organisations are key in their goals of addressing electricity supply issues and enhancing customer experience
