The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Zimbabwe tomorrow hosts a workshop to validate the Regional Framework for Action to address Disaster Displacement in Southern Africa.
The workshop to be held at the Cresta Jameson Hotel in Harare on 4 August 2022 will be attended by stakeholders from the government, United Nations agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, and the media, among others.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Zimbabwe is currently implementing a regional project: the African Regional Migration Program (ARMP) with support from the US Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM).
The program has three interlinked and mutually reinforcing outcomes, as follows:
Outcome 1: Countries in the region demonstrate commitment to and improved capacity for effective and humane migration management.
Outcome 2: Donors, UN agencies, national governments, and regional platforms regularly engage in efforts to coordinate migration programming; and
Outcome 3: Government capacities to anticipate, better prepare for, and respond to migration flows relating to emergencies and crises are increased.
Through this program, IOM provides technical support and builds capacity to protect vulnerable migrants and reinforce mechanisms to manage migration in a humane and orderly manner, with a specific focus on upholding the rights of migrants. IOM places emphasis on building the capacity of governments that have expressed their interest and are committed to improving migration management at the policy level, while also increasing intra and inter-coordination with relevant stakeholders in the country and within the SADC region.
In line with outcome 3, Government capacities to anticipate, better prepare for, and respond to migration flows relating to emergencies and crises are increased. IOM proposes to support the Department of Civil Protection to present and validate the Regional Framework for Action to Address Disaster Displacement in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe was one of the SADC countries that provided inputs into the regional study on addressing disaster displacement in Africa. The purpose of the presentation and validation workshop is to present the findings of the report and to consider and validate recommendations as relevant to Zimbabwe. This intervention seeks to strengthen the Government of Zimbabwe’s capacities on disaster risk management and reduction through prioritizing actions at the local level to address gaps identified in the regional assessment.
