Banket – Local authorities have been urged to invest in waste management equipment and focus on establishing landfills to ensure community comprehensive waste management. The call was made by Vice President Rtd General Constantino Chiwenga during the National Clean-Up campaign held in Banket yesterday.
” It may take time to purchase all the equipment at one go but it is important that all urban and rural local authorities invest in waste management equipment that enables them to have landfills which go a long way in waste management of the types of litter that is not recyclable whilst recycling those which can be recycled,” he said.
VP Chiwenga said local authorities should shift their focus on coming up with a mechanism that allows them to have the construction of story buildings for new suburbs as the country moves to save land for other purposes.
Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, HOn Mary Mliswa-Chikoka said the province is focusing on ensuring that no one should be left behind in achieving a middle-income economy.
She said opportunities in waste management offer a platform for economic emancipation.
“As we move with the mantra that no one or place should be left behind, waste management offers opportunities in creating recycling businesses,” Hon Mliswa-Chikoka said.
In attendance were various government officials including Hon Marian Chombo, the deputy minister of local government who is also the legislator for Zvimba North, captains of industry and heads of various state-owned enterprises including the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), among other critical stakeholders.
