A local youth movement has embarked on an initiative meant to restore girls’ dignity at Churu Farm.
This drive comes at the right time when residents in this developing settlement are reported to be needy of basic services such as health.
The drive is being spearheaded by Youth Inspire.
In an interview with Spiked Online Media, Youth Inspire Founder, Yolanda Nyatanga, revealed that the initiative is meant to address challenges faced by young girls in this area during their menstrual cycles.
She also pointed out that some girls abscond school during their cycles as a result of lacking these requisites hence missing out on lessons.
“Because of economic hardships in Zimbabwe we have realised that there are a number of girls not only in Churu farm which is part of Glen view but also around Zimbabwe who are failing to buy just a packet of sanitary pads per month. The shortage of such a basic need during menstrual days means the girl child is no longer functional or confident to engage in daily routines.
“This problem has, however, resulted in some of our girls missing school or absconding due to discomfort, hence this really inspired us to go for Churu for it is one of the new settlements not yet noticed by many but it’s of our Zimbabwean pride. There are beautiful young girls whom we believe if well supported can do wonders not for themselves only but for a better Zimbabwe,” said Nyatanga.
Nyatanga added that girls need support in order to retard cases of early marriages, school dropouts, and sexual exploitation hence the need for everyone to be supportive.
She also called upon all well-wishers to join hands with them in raising sanitary wear for young girls in this settlement through formal means shown on the flier.
“Churu farm is still a developing area with quite a number of underprivileged young girls. Through this project, l believe well-wishers can come together and improve their poor living conditions.
“I also believe that if we join hands as Zimbabweans, we can empower our youths also with income-generating projects such as poultry and farming. A number of girls now depend on vending while others do sell fish just for a basic meal. This is not safe for the girl child. This may result in some of them resorting to sex work so to me going for Churu Farm serves as an alarm to others who are there for change or empowerment to both the boy child and the girl child,” added Nyatanga.
