The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) is condemning actions by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) who have reportedly been deployed to block a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rally to be held in Marondera today.
The police action is despite the fact that the High Court cleared the event yesterday after the Zimbabwe Republic Police had attempted to block the rally.
“We deplore the failure by the Zimbabwe Republic Police to respect Court rulings. The conduct of the ZRP can only serve to create an uneven playing ground and cast doubts over the credibility of the March 26 by-elections and the 2023 national elections.
“We demand that ZRP must abide by its constitutional mandate and desist from operating as an appendage of the ruling party, Zanu PF,” CiZC said in a statement.
Writing on microblogging site Twitter today, Hopewell Chin’ono, an award-winning journalist and filmmaker, posted asking the ZRP to verify reports that the organisation had given police uniforms to ZANU (PF) youths who were allegedly tasked to block the CCC rally.
An attempt to get a comment from Tafadzwa Mugwadi, the ZANU (PF) Director of Information, were futile since his mobile phone was unreachable by the time of going to print.
