The Chitungwiza Residents Trust (Chitrest) is suing the Chitungwiza Municipality for contempt of court following the destruction of illegal vending and other business structures in Zengeza earlier last week – in total disregard of a court order which ruled against the demolition process.
Speaking on behalf of Chitrest, Alice Kuvheya (the organization’s director) said she was shocked by the barbaric action taken by Chitungwiza Municipality. She further pointed out that she strongly condemns how the municipality undermined the law.
“We are shocked by the Chitungwiza municipality’s barbaric actions. It seems they are no longer respecting the law or the courts. They are just demolishing vending stalls because they hate residents and informal traders. We have a court order that compels them to first build designated marketing places but since last year there is nothing to show. It’s all fake promises, one after the other,” said Kuvheya.
This publication is in possession of the urgent chamber application which identifies Alice Kuvheya and Chitrest as the first and second applicants. Chitungwiza Municipality, City of Harare, Evaristo Machona, and Tafadzwa Muguti are sighted as first, second, third, and fourth respondents respectively.
Initially, the case was reported and heard as case number H.C 2857/2021.
