Rooftop Promotions has organized a fundraising musical concert to be hosted by its performance venue Theatre in the Park this Friday October 1st, 2021 between 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM. The concert is aimed at fundraising for the music legend Bob Nyabinde fondly known as The Headmaster who has been unwell for a while. Artists expected to perform are Hope Masike, Victor Kunonga, Prudence Katomeni, Agga Nyabinde, and Chipo Muchegwa.
While the show will allow limited live audiences of not more than one hundred as per national COVID-19 lockdown regulations, it will also be virtual running on different social media platforms. Links to the Livestream will be distributed on the institution’s social media pages. Tickets are already being sold and are procurable at Theatre in the Park offices between 9 AM and 5 PM. Rooftop Promotions producer Daves Guzha says the organizing committee is delighted by the response of the artists who heeded the call to participate.
“We have come together as his friends and artists to do this show to assist him in the quest of his health,” says Guzha.
Nyabinde is one of the most celebrated musical talents in Zimbabwe, widely known mostly for his song Chabuda Hapana released in 2002 from his debut album Pane Nyaya which topped charts and made waves on local radio stations. However, he has recently suffered a stroke and his sight was affected by his diabetic condition. When reached for comment, his son Agga Nyabinde who is also participating in the concert expressed his appreciation to the fellow artists for this initiative.
“As his son and an artist, I also appreciate what fellow artists are doing. Since music is our calling, there is nothing else we can do other than fulfilling his wishes that is listening to music while we are also helping him” Nyabinde Jnr commented.
Expressing her sentiments about the show, Hope Masike reinforced the concept of ‘Ubuntu’ saying she is very excited to be part of the lineup of performers.
“I enjoy enlarging our ubuntu and I think as musicians when any misfortune befalls one of us, we need to come together and work as a team to help one another” Masike compassionately commented.
By the coming of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many artists in Zimbabwe were greatly affected failing to generate income through their musical career. Some actually dropped music to focus on other areas to sustain their families and businesses. However, Rooftop Promotions and Theatre in the Park have provided platforms for local artists during this global pandemic through the digital showcase and live streaming projects including Music in Africa Live, Poetic Dances – Aspirations in Proverbs among others.
