The Freedom of Rights Under Sovereign (FORUS) Party launched yesterday at a sold-out event in Harare heralded the dawn of an alternative in the country’s political terrain as it rides on the need to emancipate the people of Zimbabwe socially, economically, and politically.
The new party’s formation was motivated by the fact that Zimbabwe is teeming with vast mineral resources but is unfortunately rated as one of the poorest countries in the world with the majority of its citizens living in abject poverty.
“FORUS will ensure development and improved quality of life through balancing social, economic, and environmental reflections. We will be fostering human resources development, social development, inclusive development, sustainable development and ensure the living standards are internationally recognized.
“FORUS will ensure modernization, industrialization, and promotion of investment with the ultimate goal of attaining broad-based economic empowerment, inclusive economic growth and employment creation. Our party will ensure economic recovery through a structural transformation towards industrialization which is critical for sustained economic growth and development. This will be driven by value addition, beneficiation, commercialization, and trade. These initiatives and interventions by FORUS are centred on developing linkages across key sectors of the economy namely: agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and services will set the economy on a sustained growth trajectory,” a spokesperson for the party told media during the FORUS launch.
Manyara Irene Muyenziwa, the FORUS Party president, said her party will prioritize the refining of business operating environment, technology, international trade, industrial development, the mobilisation of funding for technology transfer, international trade and commerce, industrial development, backing the agricultural and mining sectors, improving research and development, skills transfer as well as infrastructure development.
She said FORUS is an inclusive liberal party with a transformational, social and economic agenda that promotes equal opportunities and a fair distribution of income in a transparent manner. Muyenziwa said FORUS’ pledge is to create more opportunities around the wealth we have as a nation, and developing a proper economic transformation agenda that should rebuild the nation to pursue national interest.
The party’s core values are diligence; social justice; transparency; equality; and accountability. FORUS Party’s aim is to see a free and open society where there is a balance on the basic fundamental human rights with a guarantee that no one will be enslaved by poverty, corruption or violence.
The party values peace, prosperity and the citizens’ diversity understanding that its role is to nurture citizens to meaningfully contribute towards nation-building.
“We pledge to fulfil democratic values that the others have failed to fulfil and attain. The main objective of FORUS is to promote and effectively advance harmony amongst all classes of citizens in this country paying little attention to ethnicity, race, colour, faith, status, disability, gender preference and the status of occupation in the public arena or political affiliation.
“FORUS aims to ensure that the nation maintains cordial ties with all countries that regard our power and trustworthiness as a nation to promote the goals that reinforce the economic engagements of African nations, the Commonwealth and the United Nations, searching for development of friendships with all ideological parties in Africa and other countries who share the party’s liberal and majority belief in the rule of law. Our aim is to develop good territorial relations and maintain relations to advance and uphold the values of democracy and the rule of law in Africa and the international arena,” Muyenziwa added.
