In response to a barrage of criticism from subscribers who have become attached to the country’s leading mobile money transaction platform which underwent a system upgrade from Saturday, EcoCash has announced that it successfully migrated to a new platform over the weekend, and that it was now addressing post-cutover stabilisation issues.
“We successfully implemented the planned upgrade of EcoCash to a new, more secure platform, and would like to thank our valued customers for their patience over this period,” a statement from Mr Eddie Chibi, the CEO of Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe, the parent company of EcoCash, said.
“We are now dealing with post-cutover stability issues to optimise the availability of various EcoCash services across the new platform, and once again request our customers to bear with us as this may result in intermittent service,” the statement said.
EcoCash announced a planned major upgrade of its platform last week to improve system availability, user experience, security and long term capacity issues.
The situation took a nasty turn when the platform’s millions of subscribers realised that the USSD option to purchase airtime online had been removed.
However, most economists said the anger by the majority of Zimbabweans was to some extent justifiable since Ecocash handles millions of transactions per day and is the largest mobile transacting platform in the country.
