Steering Zimbabwean television content in a direction of greater quality and quantity is a key focus for Christine Nyirenda.
Now head of programming for newly-established 3Ktv, she has her sights set on making sure there’s exponential growth in the amount of content for TV produced in Zimbabwe in coming years, matched by steady growth in all-round quality.
‘Zimbabweans have a huge appetite for good local content and our brand definer ‘the best of Zimbabwe’ means we must both satisfy that appetite and give them superlative productions, ‘ she said.
Christine has a background in television and communications. Born and educated in Bulawayo, she moved to Harare after leaving school and joined Ztv, hosting a great many programmes. She had previously been involved in a children’s show from the age of 11 and this gave her a strong desire for a career in TV.
She later moved into public relations, first working in-house for the Rainbow Tourism Group and later running her own PR consultancy.
She continued to stay involved with TV while in PR and also became a frequent event Emcee.
Christine comes from a family in which she was the sixth and youngest child and she now has three children of her own. Focusing on family issues is therefore a key interest in her TV work.
‘Our new 3Ktv is a game-changer in Zimbabwean television and feedback to date is very positive,’ said Christine.
She has long been a DStv viewer and is especially pleased with its variety and its ability to provide something for the whole family.
‘Popular shows in my household include Budget Bites, KaLife, and Tangled on 3Ktv and Tipping Point and Come Dine With Me on other DStv channels,’ she said.
Christine enjoys making use of the DStv App for payments, balance checks, and clearing decoder error codes, all convenient for a busy mother and executive.
The sky’s the limit for her, so her ambitions for TV growth in Zimbabwe are limitless.
